Statement from the HSA regarding change to Occupational First Aid
1 June 2017
Statement of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in relation to transition to Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) First Aid Response Education and Training Standard
________________________________________________________________
Following on from previous communications, the HSA is now in a position to announce that as and from 1 September 2017, it will only recognise the PHECC First Aid Response Education and Training Standard (FAR) as meeting the needs of occupational first aid (OFA) in all workplaces.
Occupational First Aiders
The HSA will recognize training and assessment relating to QQI’s Level 5 OFA (5N1207) that took place up to 31 August 2017. That recognition will be for a 2 year period. (Please note that it is possible that the QQI component certificate could be dated post 31 August 2017 e.g. October or December 2017).
Refresher certificates issued by recognised training providers up to 31 August 2017 will also be recognised by the HSA for a 2 year period. Thereafter existing occupational first aiders can apply to have their qualifications individually assessed by a participating PHECC recognised institution (RI) in accordance with the RI’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and procedures.
What is the First Aid Responder (FAR) course?
From the 1st of March 2017 we are able to offer our clients the new standard first aid course for the workplace from the Health and Safety Authority and the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council, First Aid Responder. This new 3 day course will replace the current standard Occupational First Aid course in 2017. See our training pages for more information on the course content!

First Aid Responder course
Following the changes being made to the First Aid at Work course by the HSA from Occupational First Aid to First Aid Responder we are busy preparing ourselves for the changover. We are already associated with Heartbeat Safety for our Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council courses and it is our aim to keep the high standard both we and HBS group demand for students. The OFA course still continues to be the recognised requirement for First Aid at Work and as soon as the FAR is available we will be ready to deliver it.

City and Guilds First Aid Course
It has come to our attention that the QQI qualification isn’t the only form of accreditation clients are looking for and so we have some exciting news. We are working with a training partner to develop a City and Guilds first aid course for approval for use in the European client market. We completed a one day Emergency First Aid course for loggers recently and after some discussion with the management and staff it was obvious that there is some elements that our ‘normal’ courses don’t offer. Watch this space for further information.
